The Directors

Team Magic is co-owned by Therese Bynum and Faye Yates. Bynum and Yates serve as race directors at all events. Both Bynum and Yates are USA Triathlon Certified Race Directors and have served on regional and national committees.

Therese Bynum received her undergraduate degree from the Mississippi University for Women and her post-graduate degree from University of Alabama at Birmingham

Therese has raced for over 25 years very competitively and continues to top the master’s ranks when she finds time to race. In 2007, Therese was 6th in her age group at the USAT National Championship and represented the USA at the World Championship in Switzerland by claiming 8th in her age group.

Faye Yates received her undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University in Mechanical Engineering. She started working with Therese Bynum part time in 1995 and made Team Magic her full-time occupation in 2002 with a focus on expanding the Tennessee races.

When not organizing events, Faye also enjoys racing with many triathlons under her belt, many marathons (including the Boston Marathon) and half-marathons and one Ironman Triathlon in Panama City Beach, Florida. Faye also serves on the Board of Directors for Girls On The Run Nashville.

Team Magic, Inc:

Bynum came up with the Team Magic race management concept to give her customers something to do back in the late 80’s, when she owned and managed at triathlon shop in Birmingham. Yates moved to Birmingham for her first job out of college and met Bynum when she bought her first tri bike at the shop. The two combined their educational backgrounds in exercise and engineering management and personal interests in multisport to unfold what Team Magic, Inc. is today.

The Company:

Team Magic originated in Birmingham, Alabama but is now based out of both Nashville and Birmingham and has strong ties on the Gulf Coast of Alabama. The company will have been producing multisport events for almost thirty years. While triathlons and duathlons are the main focus and make up the majority of the events, Team Magic also has worked and currently works with several running events, including the Mercedes Marathon, the Marathon Olympic Trials hosted by the Mercedes Marathon, the JP Morgan Corporate Challenge in Chicago. Team Magic was appointed as race management for the 2007-2008 USA Triathlon National Collegiate Triathlon Championship. In 2008, Team Magic served as race management for the Tuscaloosa Tri-Palooza which included the Men’s and Women’s Olympic Trials Qualifier for the Beijing Olympics.

Team Magic regularly receives the honor of hosting championship events for USA Triathlon, including regional championships, national championships, world championship qualifiers and the Best of the USA Amateur Championship Qualifiers for the states of Alabama and Tennessee.

Expanding to Nashville:

In 2001, Team Magic began expanding into Tennessee with the Powerman Tennessee Duathlon. In 2002, the Old Hickory Lake Triathlon was added in Hendersonville, TN, about 30 miles from Nashville. Since that time, several more triathlons have been added in the Nashville area. In 2005 Team Magic joined a partnership with the Chattanooga Track Club to bring new life to the long running Chattanooga Dam Triathlon, which is now one of the premier and largest triathlons in the southeast. In 2006, Team Magic took ownership of the 2nd oldest triathlon in the country – the Music City Triathlon, which celebrates 35 years in 2013 at its new location in the heart of downtown Nashville.

Expanding to the Gulf Coast of Alabama:

In 2007, Team Magic developed a partnership with the Alabama Gulf Coast Sports Commission to develop the Alabama Coastal Triathlon, which is now one of the most successful events on the calendar. With the same partners, a half-marathon weekend now takes place the Saturday following Thanksgiving in the same area of Orange Beach and Gulf Shores, Alabama.
